Lawrence J. Conley, 81

Lawrence J. Conley, Sr., 81, of 618 Prospect St., died Wednesday, November 22, 2006  at Lancaster Regional Medical Center.

He was the husband of the late Emma Jane Devine Conley, who died this past June. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Catherine E. Boyle Conley.

Lawrence had worked for the UGI Utilities Corp. in residential sales for 37 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a 1943 graduate of JP McCaskey High School, and upon his graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy. Lawrence served with distinction as a Radarman 3rd class on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier in the Pacific during World War II. He was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the WW2 Victory Medal, the American Theater Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with eight bronze star devices.

A lover of music, Lawrence played the alto saxophone in several local bands and with the ship’s band on the USS Hornet. He was a member of the American Legion Post 34.

His family was of utmost importance in his life, and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He is survived by 2 sons: Lawrence J., Jr., married to Linda Conley of East Petersburg, and Jere married to Linda Conley of Lancaster; 2 daughters: Denise  married to Rick McGeary of Palo Alto, CA, and Cheri  married to Chris Jones of Fairport, NY; and 5 grandchildren: Mark and Todd Jones, Shaun McGeary, and Sheila and Adam Conley.

He is also survived by 2 brothers: Jere P. Conley of Lancaster, and Dr. Joseph Conley of Hattersheim, Germany. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Baker.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 6-8PM at the Charles Snyder Funeral Home, 414 E. King St., Lancaster, PA. Mass will be celebrated on Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph St., Lancaster, PA at 10:30AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Lawrence’s memory to the Heartland Hospice Services, 320 Granite Run Dr, Suite 200, Lancaster, PA 17601.
