Rowena (Smith) Davis, 87

May 15, 2018

Rowena (Smith) Davis, 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Conestoga View Nursing Home on May 15, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip W. Davis. Phil and Rowena were married 64 years.

Born in Hartford, TN to Mary Laws (Smith) and Otha Smith, Rowena moved to New Jersey with her parents and siblings, Arvella and Robert, when she was 8 years old. After returning to school later in life, Rowena became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked at Bridgeton Hospital in Bridgeton, NJ until her retirement. During her nursing career, she earned a number of honors for her care of patients and staff. To Rowena, nursing was a calling to which she devoted her life.

Two sons, Lewis and Philip C. (Chet) Davis, preceded Rowena in death and she is survived by a third son and his wife, George and Denise (Ross) Davis. Rowena enjoyed being a grandmother to three grandchildren and their spouses: Deanna & Aaron Young, Jeremy & Aeriel (Grosser) , and Karli & Jeff Smeiles. In addition, Rowena often introduced a family friend, Gus Jones, as her adopted son. She is survived by nine great grand children who visited her at her home in Conestoga View.

Rowena was a long-time member of Chestnut Assembly of God in Vineland, NJ and later became a faithful member of The Worship Center church in New Holland, PA. She loved to craft things, read, and journal. She will be missed by her friends at Conestoga View and remembered lovingly by those she helped and those for whom she regularly prayed.

Gravesite memorial services will be held privately by her family at the Seventh Day Baptist Church Cemetery, Route 49, Shiloh, NJ.

I was in to see Rowena about a week and a half ago but she was very sleepy and did not talk much to me. I will always remember her and Phil as we went to the same church back in the  1960’s.  Also brought Rowena to her grandaughter’s wedding.  I was the nurse who saw them at their apartment in Willow Street and our agency provided nurses aides to help with Phil’s care.  We loved them both.  I also visited them both at conestoga view before Phil passed to glory.  Then I visited Rowena when I could.  Loved them both but glad they are now together again and will see them again.  God bless you all as I know you will miss her. My prayers are with you.

Thanks mom, for teaching me about caring for people and making sure that justice is a part of my way of life. Also, just so you know, the boy that hated picking weeds now finds it to be a calming distraction.  You win.
George
