Charles Edward Doolittle, 80

April 01, 2016

Charles Edward Doolittle, of Millersville, went home to be with the Lord on April 1, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born March 14, 1936 in Franklin, Pa., he was son of the late Frederick Charles Doolittle & the late Mary Irene Kirby Doolittle.

Charles grew up at the Bethesda Lutheran Children’s Home in Meadville, PA. As a teenager he had the opportunity to work on the orphanage dairy farm where he became part of the Irad Wensel family. Those special relationships lasted throughout his lifetime.

After high school he joined the Army Security Agency serving in Korea and the Philippines from 1954-1957 as a Morse code interceptor. He graduated from Penn State in 1961 with a B.S. degree in vocational agriculture and science. He received a M.A. from Appalachian State University in biology. Chuck taught at a number of private and public schools, and the last 25 years of his career were spent teaching biology and environmental science at Manheim Township High School.

After retirement he volunteered as a van driver for the VA, and taught science to home schoolers.

Chuck was a member of the former Abbyville Road Christian Church where he was Deacon of Benevolence, taught Sunday School and served on the Missions’ team. He was currently attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church.

An avid fisherman, boater, camper and gardener, he also enjoyed music, poetry, reading, traveling, antiquing, woodworking, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

A loving husband and father, Chuck will be greatly missed by his wife of 37 years, Sharon L; his 3 sons, David A. (Martha), Dr. Daniel S. (Pam), & Douglas I. (Sarah) Doolittle; his daughter, Cynthia A. Witmer (Mark); 20 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Chuck is also survived by his former wife Ruth Herr Powers. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul L. Doolittle.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6 at the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, 151 Donerville Road, Lancaster, PA 17603 with Pastor David A. Thomann and Pastor R. Karl Crouch officiating. The family will receive visitors from 10 – 11 a.m.

At Chuck’s request, in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Faith Bible Fellowship Church Missions Fund.

I had Mr. Doolittle as my 10th grade Bio teacher in 1981 when we got to watch the first Space Shuttle land on TV in his classroom. I learned a lot in his class and will always remember him as a nice man. He was one of many outstanding teachers at MTHS in the 80’s.

All of at Bethesda Children’s Home were sadden by the news of Chuck’s death. All of us here at Bethesda enjoyed Chuck’s warm friendly personality and his love of Bethesda Children’s Home, he will be sadly missed at our Alumni Reunions. Chuck had a deep love for Bethesda and what it meant to him growing up and use to tell some very comical stories about the antics that he and his friends would pull while living at Bethesda, we are glad we got to hear them.
