Khammai Douangsouri, 76

November 11, 2018

On Sunday, November 11, 2018, Khammai Douangsouri, formerly of Brownstown, a loving husband and father of eight children, passed away at age 76 with his wife and youngest daughter by his side in Wisconsin.

Khammai was born on June 5, 1942 in Sakonakone, Thailand. He had many different careers in Laos & Thailand, from dedicating his time in the service, to working at the hospital as a translator to the US Embassy in Vientiane.

On January 2, 1966 he married Soulichanh Hongvanthong. In 1979 he migrated his family from Laos to the United States to seek a better, prosperous life. Khammai was very well respected and had many friends in the community because of his services as a translator for families entering the United States.

A quote from 1979 from the United States Embassy Refugee Coordinator Lionel Rosenblatt regarding Khammai said “His professional qualities as well as his warm personality and sense of humor have won the respect of his colleagues in the field.”

Living in the United States, he held various jobs such as a social worker in Philadelphia, when relocating to Lancaster, he worked at Armstrong World Industries making storm doors in Leola, PA, to supporting the family at the Indo-Sewing Inc. business in Leola, then Brownstown, PA. He finally finished his career working as a janitor at the Brownstown Vo-Tech for 5 years.

Khammai had a passion for sports. He enjoyed watching boxing, soccer and football. Never having a specific sports team or person to root for, he enjoyed the competition and cheered on the match up. One of his favorite activities was to keep his vintage 1989 Mercedes Benz 560SEL model in tip top shape. Always cleaning and buffing the car any chance he had.

He is survived by his wife, Soulichanh, his eight children Kongchai, Phonxay, Bounmy, Niranam, Sue, Joy, Mani, Grant, and his twin sister Sagna in Thailand. He was also proud to have 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Khammai was preceded in death by his father Khamma, his mother Hai.
