Katerina “Kay” P. Drogaris, 99

February 28, 2014

Katerina “Kay” P. Drogaris, 99, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2014. Born and educated in Athens, Greece, she was the daughter of the late Elephtherios and Magdalina (Kambouropoulou) Kalokiarinos.

Kay was the wife of the late Peter A. Drogaris who died in 1960.

While living in Washington D.C. she supported her husband’s restaurant and sports construction business. They later moved their family to Pensacola, Florida where, after her husband’s death, she dedicated her energies to providing for her son. She was fiercely independent and sustained an incredible work ethic.

She was dedicated to her church life, extended family, and volunteerism. Kay was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Lancaster, where she loyally volunteered at the Annual Greek Bazaar well into her 90’s.While living in Florida, she was the Founder and Chairwoman of the Annual Greek Bazaar at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, Pensacola. Kay was a member of both the Philoptochos Society and Daughters of Penelope and was president of both organizations in Pensacola.

Kay had travelled extensively throughout Europe. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and hosting family parties. Her wholehearted sense of humor and knack for storytelling will always be remembered by her family and friends.

Surviving is a son, Ed P. Drogaris, husband of Andriana (Hazangeles), of Lancaster, and two grandchildren, Peter and Diana, also of Lancaster.

A Greek tradition is to wish a long life and say “na ta katostisis,” which means may you live to be 100. Yaiya Kay would always add, “and after that, you’re on your own.” Mom, you were never on your own.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Spencer Phillips and the staffs at the Long Community, LGH, and Homestead Village.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 10:30AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603, with Rev. Dr. Alexander Goussetis officiating and Rev. Hector Firoglanis. Viewings will be held on Tuesday from 7 until 9 PM in the chapel of the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home 3110 Lititz Pike with a Trisagion Service at 8 PM, and a second viewing at the church on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30AM. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park.
