George Robert Durang, Jr., 86

January 01, 2015

George Robert Durang, Jr., 86, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 1, 2015, at his residence in Brethren Village. George was the son of the late George R. Durang, Sr. and Cleta (Reddick) Durang. He was the loving husband of the late Dolores (Clavin) Durang with whom he was married 25 years.

A graduate of Frandford High School in Philadelphia, he served in the US Air Force before being honorably discharged in 1952 as Staff Sergeant.

George joined Meryl Lynch in 1958 and began a long career as a stock trader, subsequently working for a number of brokerage firms. He eventually moved to Lancaster where he retired after 15 years as Vice President and Manager of the trading department at CoreStates Bank.

An active member of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church, George is survived by his daughter LeeAnn, wife of David DiCola, and a granddaughter Nicolette Marie, all of West Chester.

George was an avid sports fan, a history buff, and a lover of good music and fast cars. He loved to travel, especially to his beloved Newfoundland. He was stationed there in 1950, and returned many times to enjoy the peace and serenity of the beautiful island and its people.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 East Delp Road, Lancaster, PA 17601 with the Rev. Dr. David Danneker as Celebrant. Family and friends will be received at the church for a time of visitation one hour prior to Mass. Interment will follow at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George’s memory may be made to St. John Neumann Guardian Angel Fund at the above address.

Condolences to the Family

Dear LeeAnn,
I have such fond memories of your dad when he lived across the street from my parents on Murray Hill Drive.  Both he and Dolores were such good neighbors and a visit to my folks always included a stop at George’s house.  The world had lost a good man.  May you find comfort in knowing that an angel is watching over you.
With deepest sympathy,
Grace Sigworth Holdren

We are so very sorry for your loss. George was a wonderful conversationalist. Whether talking about history, sports, or parish life he had well informed views, fascinating stories, and a warm laugh. He was always so kind and encouraging and, likewise, quick to thank others for any small service done for him. Such a gentle and generous spirit is a good friend to have in heaven even as he is dearly missed here on earth.

George was one of my alltime favorite gentlemen from the securities business. He always stayed the same and was such a honor to speak too.His knowledge and understanding of the market was always on display when he spoke. He never changed his personality in all of the years that I knew him. You always knew where you stood with him as he didn’t have a phony bone in his body. God Bless you my friend and rest in peace.
