Virginia B. Duval, 88

Virginia B. Duval, 88, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Lancaster General Hospital.

Virginia is the wife of the late Paul A. Duval who passed away in 2006. She was born in Minneapolis, MN to the late Herbert T. Bertsch and Eleanor Tuscany Bertsch.

A warm and gracious homemaker, Virginia was deeply involved in her community, serving on the boards of the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, St. Joseph Hospital and the Visiting Nurses Association. She was one of the founding volunteers of Birthright of Lancaster, now A Woman’s Concern. An active member of the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild and the Central Pennsylvania Guild of Hand Weavers, she shared a gift for textile design, and delight in the possibilities of color and texture.

She and her husband were among the founding members of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. In retirement, they took a leadership role in founding the parish of St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church in Hilton Head, SC. and garnering support for the design and construction of its church.

Virginia took great joy in traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by four children: Constance L. Duval of Lancaster, Jeanne-Marie D. married to Claude Pierrelouis of Gaithersburg, MD, Elizabeth D. married to Rodney L. Spotts of Leola, and Paul H. married to Margaret Duval of Atlanta, GA and by ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia D. Castagno and her brother, Frank Bertsch.

Friends will be received on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 9:30-10:30AM at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA, with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30AM, the Rev. Peter Hahn as Celebrant.  Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made in Virginia’s memory to A Woman’s Concern, 616 N. Duke St., Lancaster, PA 17602, or to Doctors Without Borders USA, Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741, or to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.
