Ethan Haas, 21

July 16, 2023

Ethan Haas, 21, of Mount Joy, passed away unexpectedly at home on July 16, 2023. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Jennifer Geiser Haas and J. Craig Haas. Ethan was a 2020 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School, where he was a chess team champion, earning 2nd Place in his division in the 2019 State Scholastic Chess Championship. Together, Ethan’s Lancaster Mennonite chess team won 1st Place in the Lancaster-Lebanon league in every year that he was on the team.

Ethan was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Joy.

A second-year student at Penn State Harrisburg, Ethan was working towards a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. He enjoyed designing ways to improve the performance of both his and others’ computers, as well as building computers from scratch.

A loyal and dedicated employee of Subway, Ethan was known for smiling and being friendly to coworkers and customers, and creating quality sandwiches.

Ethan had an ear for music. As young as five years old, he could tap out simple songs on the piano from memory. Ethan enjoyed the contemporary orchestral music of TSO and soundtracks by John Williams, as well as popular music by Imagine Dragons and Owl City.

Ethan enjoyed spending his free time playing video games such as Destiny, Pokemon Go, and Minecraft, and watching favorite TV shows like “The Office.” Ethan looked forward to annual vacations with his family on Chincoteague Island. He showered affection on the family dog, Pudge.

In addition to his parents, Ethan is survived by his sister Lydia Haas and his brother Noah Haas. He is also survived by his paternal grandfather John “Jack” Haas, of Manheim. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother LaVerne S. Haas, and maternal grandparents Milton Geiser and Mary Jane Geiser.

All who knew Ethan will remember him for his kind and gentle spirit, as well as his warm and charming smile and musical laughter.

A celebration of Ethan’s life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mount Joy, 47 W. Main St. Mount Joy, PA 17552 on Tuesday, July 25. Family will receive visitors at 10am followed by a funeral service at 11am. A lunch reception will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, friends can contribute in Ethan’s memory to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.

Condolences to the Family

I never met Ethan, but always hoped I’d run into him so we could joke about his dad a bit. Tell Ethan how much you lit up talking about him, the tangents that brought him into the hearts of so many peers. Love goes beyond the physical person of the beloved and finds deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self, and it’s clear that Ethan shared a wonderful spirit with all around him. May nothing touch the strength of your love, your thoughts, and the image of Ethan. “Set me as a seal upon thine heart, for love is strong as death.”

Dear Craig, Jennifer, Lydia and Noah,
I had the true privelege of both having Ethan as a student in my physics class and on my chess team. He was brilliant in both situations. Often he put me in a difficult situation in grading tests because he could figure things out in ways that were above my brain power!
He always wanted to win his chess matches (and usually did) not just for his own accomplishment but also to support his teammates and team.

His sense of humor was understated but very enjoyable.
I am sorry for the incredible loss that you and all who knew Ethan are experiencing.

Dear Craig, Jennifer, Lydia, and Noah, though I never had the opportunity to meet Ethan, I did have the chance to hear about your beloved Ethan through Craig’s class, and there are no words great enough to describe what a light Ethan was to your family. Craig never missed a chance to talk about his beautiful family specially his children’s intelligence, kindness and overall beautiful heart, you could visibly see Craig’s face light up whenever he had a chance to talk about Ethan, it was radiating. My deepest condolences to your family.

It is quite amazing how one person can change the lives of so many people and Ethan Haas was one of those people to me. One thing that he and I enjoyed most in life was playing Pokemon Go and it was Ethan who reintroduced me to the game 2 years after its initial release where me and him would trade, catch pokemon, and do raid battles at Lancaster Mennonite High School and the Penn State Harrisburg campus, and I thank him for that to this day because he introduced me to something that I have enjoyed for the past five years and will continue to enjoy for the rest of my life. I recall that Ethan told me one time that his favorite Pokemon of all time was a pokemon called Aggron. I send my deepest condolences to his family Craig, Jenny, Lydia, and Noah Haas. Goodbye PkmnGymLeader85 rest in peace!

My heart is hurting for you guys.  Ethan was a special young man.   I remember coaching him and Noah in MSO.   I remember seeing Ethan at high school events.  I especially remember our tiny KRAYBILL family.   He will always be loved for sure by the folks that were part of that community.    Please know that all of the Weavers are praying for you all.   Ethan is in a much better place but you are left with what to do next.   I know your faith will carry you through. God Bless you guys as you navigate this

Craig, Jennifer, Lydia, and Noah,
My deepest sympathy goes out to each of you. I was so sad when I read about Ethan’s death. I was your second grade teacher for Lydia, Ethan and Noah. I dug out the yearbook when Ethan was in second grade, 2010.  Looking at the pictures reminded me again of the many good memories we had that year and the projects you made. Praying for each of you as you journey through this grief process. The Lord knows all that you are going through. He collects every tear in a bottle. Psalm 56:8 God loves you and cares about each of you.

Craig, Jennifer, Lydia and Noah,
I am so sorry about this heartbreaking loss of such a fine person, a dear, dear son, and brother. I hope your many wonderful memories of Ethan can give some solace that you got to share so many fine things in life together. Craig and I might be philosophers, but life and death still make no rational sense, and all we can do is love and support each other in these difficult moments of loss. Judith and I will be thinking of you and sending you light and care. Love, Judith and Glen
