Donald Harvey, 78
Donald Harvey, 78, of Silver Spring, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, after a three-week illness.
Born in Lancaster on Dec. 3, 1928, he was the son of the late Elsie and Robert McFalls. He is survived by Anna, his wife of 53 years, and three daughters Donna, wife of Tom Kiehl, Largo, Fla.; Paula, wife of Jeff Current, Millerstown; and Elizabeth, wife of Steve Goss, Lancaster. There are six grandchildren Becky, wife of Scott Barr, Columbia; Laura Mooney, fiancée of Chuck Henry, Newport; Wes and Cody Hagen, Lancaster; Jeff Current Jr., husband of Melissa, Dalzella, S.C.; and Wendy Current, Reading; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
An outdoorsman, who loved hunting and fishing, he explored his artistic side by tying fishing flies, and painting and sketching outdoors scenes.
After graduating in 1948 from McCaskey High School, he worked at L.B. Herr & Son, where he met Anna. He was soon drafted into the Army, serving in Austria from 1951 to 1953, and earned a spot as an alternate with the 1952 U.S. Olympic Rifle Team. Upon his return from service, he bred and trained Weimaraners.
In 1990, he retired as supervisor of the corrosion-control engineering department after 33 years with UGI Corp. He was a member of its Quarter Century Club, and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.
In retirement he, along with his wife, was owner of Stone House Antiques. Through this endeavor, Harvey rekindled his interest in art through fine antique china and crockery repair.
In recent years, “Harv” looked forward to visits to Florida, antiques auctions sharing childhood stories, curling up with his beloved kitties, reading outdoors magazines and dining on Bloody Marys and S.O.S. — dried beef gravy on toast.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Chapel, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, with interment immediately following the service.
