Sylvia L. Heidig

December 18, 2013

Sylvia L. Heidig, of Lancaster, died on December 18, 2013.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Henry A. and Mabel Ammon Heidig. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Charles Miller, of Lancaster; cousin Nancy Draude Carvell, of Lancaster; cousin Louis Edwards, of Alaska; and dear and caring friend Mary Sandoe, who visited and cheered her twice weekly during her three year illness.

Sylvia worked for 45 years in various secretarial positions at Armstrong World Industries, retiring in 1993 as Executive Secretary in International and Industry Products Operations.

During the Korean War, she was a USO junior hostess.

After retiring, she acted as a part-time teacher’s aide at Brecht School for three years and as a volunteer at the American Red Cross, United Way, Junior Achievement, Lung Association, and Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13.

Sylvia was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and was a 1948 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School as Salutatorian.

In earlier years, Sylvia’s enjoyment was dining out with friends, reading, dancing, and concerts.

Sylvia was blessed with many friends throughout her life who supported her and kept in touch with Joyce during her illness. For that reason, there will be no visitation or public service. Interment will be private and in the family plot in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sylvia’s name may be made to Mountville Welfare Association, PO Box 56, Mountville, PA 17554, or to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.

Dear Joyce and Mary: It was a privilege to get to know Sylvia over the last 2 years that I have worked at Landis Homes. I miss seeing her every day in the dining room, talking with her, laughing with her.
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn the loss of your sister and friend.
