March 03, 2018

Donald Richard Herr, 89, a resident of Mennonite Home Communities in Lancaster and formerly of Lititz, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy. Known to many as “Dick” and more recently as “Don,” he was born in Lancaster, the son of the late Benjamin F. and Ruth A. (Zimmerman) Herr, and was the beloved husband of the late Patsy A. (Schlotzhauer) Herr, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2008.
Dick worked for 38 years at Posey Iron Works in positions including Estimator and Vice President. He later did engineering and estimating work for Herr and Sacco, from where he retired. While there, he engineered the well-known lobby staircases at the American Music Theater in Lancaster. After retirement, he drove cars at the Manheim Auto Auction. Dick was a member of the Leola War Memorial Association and the Leola Pool Association. He was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Lancaster, where he served as a Deacon, a Moderator, a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir.
Dick is survived by three daughters, Cynthia L. Russo and her husband Vincent of New Castle; Carol A. Steffy and her husband Roger of Marietta; and Susan K. Manning and her husband Tim Berry of Aurora, IL. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Benjamin Moran and his wife Lisa, Rachel Call, Melinda Steffy and her husband Matthew Lavanish, Nathan Steffy, Anna Manning and Meredith Manning; 3 great-grandchildren, Ian Call, Mya Steffy and Asher Lavanish; and 2 sisters-in-law, Virginia Herr and Kathryn Herr. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Louise Nichols, and brothers, Frank, Robert, and James Herr.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service which will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 11:00 AM at the Mennonite Home Chapel, 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA, 17601, where the family will receive guests beginning at 10:30 AM.
