Condolences to the Family

April 18, 2023

Dear Jean, Billy and Ardyth, my deepest sympathy to you and your family. When I was an intern at LGH in ’76 if we saw a patient from Lititz they likely were patients of Hess, Swan and Holder! When I returned to Lancaster in ’81 I was honored to be able to care for the orthopedic needs of his patients as an attending. When they came from Art, you knew they were well cared for.
You will remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Dr. Gerald Rothacker

Dear Jean Anne and Billy,  Sending you all the love and prayers in the universe.  Dr. Holder was an incredible person and stellar doctor.  He had such a huge impact in my life.  He was such an iconic presence amongst a Gang of other presences.  The fun that the Gang had in anything they did was always a benchmark for me to achieve in my adulthood.  He was also such a solid, empathetic voice & advocate for myself and my parents.  Please focus on all the good and laughter and love during this time.  And as Joann would say…Keep the Faith.  Irene Hanley

Dear Jean Anne, Billy, Ardy & Craig,
Billy you were so kind to let us know that your father, Art passed away earlier this month.  May you all find peace & comfort through this time of grieving.  A flood of very special memories came to mind!  We moved to SW Florida-Villas of Cedar Key in Punta Gorda 2003.  Shortly thereafter, we not only became friends of Art & Jean Anne-but with an entire family.  The Sailfish rarely left the dock without Peter, Jean Anne & Art.  Fishing was a love by all, however the competition between Art & Peter was fierce.  There were many a fish dinner with the days fish storytelling on their lanai.  Then we remember how our black Cockapoo was so loved by Art that if we’d let Sadie out & mentioned Art’s name…Sadie would run like a bullet the length of our building, passing the pool going directly to their back lanai door & demand entrance!  The treats were of course offered freely and why not…Art & Jean Anne were Sadie’s Godparents.  Sadie stayed with them in PA when we took a Mediterranean Cruise & when we returned to take her home, she wanted to stay with Art!  Sadie loved Art best!  oh, and then we enjoyed the visits in PA!  Cozy home cooked dinners with just the 4 of us or dinners out to the restaurant Billy was manager or visits with Ardy & Craig at their home.  We especially remember & loved being apart of a surprise Birthday party for Art at Moravian Manor where we were included along with his entire family!                                                     Only one quote came to mind about our friend, Art Holder-from Shakespeare’s Hamlet Act 1 Scene ll:  “He was a man.  Take him for all in all.  I shall not look upon his likes again.”            Linda & Peter Gillen, Punta Gorda Florida.

Dr.Holder was a formative figure in my life. He was a terrific doctor who was fun to work with, once he realized you were as committed to his patients as he was. Always with the dry humor, he became good friends with my Mother, Denise, who worked with him as well. He and Jean Ann danced at our wedding, and were pronounced the longest married couple among our guests. To say he will be missed is an understatement. What a wonderful man, and a dutiful life he lived. Sending love, prayers and thoughts to his family.

Dear Jean Anne, Bill, Ardy and family,
Speaking from 60 years of friendship I feel free to say with authority that we all lost lost an exceptional man with the passing of our friend,Art. He was a above all a scholar, keeping up with the latest in medicine. He was also an outstanding clinician whom my late husband Ed referred to as “the best diagnostician he ever encountered.” He was a loving partner and accomplice in mischief to Jean Anne and a wonderful and caring father whom Bill, Ardy and his grandchildren adore. He was a great and fun loving friend whom the surviving members of ” the Gang ” will sorely miss. What great memories he leaves behind! My love and sympathy to you, Jean Anne  ,to the kids and grandkids. Stay strong.
I love  you,
Connie

Dr. Holder, the best doctor I ever had. I can’t say enough how much I loved the doctors as a kid because of him. I always get a little pen light from him. My condolences to his family. But you all can be very proud of the man he was and how he treated his patients. Much love,

Jean Anne and family,  I am so sorry to hear about Dr Holder’s passing. When I was a young nurse, he was my mentor. I still think about him and think about the “old scool” ways of doing things . There were no computer, no cell phones. We actually had to decipher his hand writing! He was a teacher and would let me do hands on things with patients , of course with him present,  that now a days wouldn’t be permissable. . Because of him I have experiences that many nurses never had. Even after he retired, we still kept in touch. I can not express the respect and love I had for this man. I know he is at peace. God bless you and your family.

Jean Ann, Bill, Ardyth and Family
From his Phi Beta Kappa days onward, Art was a symbol of acievement and devotion throuout his busy life.  He was a respected friend and an outstanding physician to many who hated to see him retire from  practice.
As the only remaining survivor of LOAF, I’m sure I speak for all of us– Bommie, Dennis, Ed, Both Bills, Wip and Charlie–when I say how much we looked forward to our annual pilgimage to the Outer Banks in search of the often elusuve blue.  He always set the pace, fishing with the same determination as he did everthing else–usually landing the most fish.
As he moves on, we wish him all the “blitzes” he can handle and eternal freedom from golf.
He was fortunate to have you as a devoted family keeping him interested in life as it faded away. We join you in your sorrow.  He will be greatly missed and long remembered.

Bill and Ardy – I am so very sorry to learn of your fathers passing. He was a caring physician and a very dear friend of our family. I will never forget his wonderful sense of humor and his infectious laugh. Never forget the GANG. Natalie and I send our deepest sympathies and know that we are praying for your mother, both of you and your families.

Dr. holder was our family doctor for my entire childhood in Lititz. My Father was diabetic. Dr. Holder made house calls on a regular basis when my Father was having issues. He gave my Father the best advice, which unfortunately my Father didn’t follow when he broke his ankle.  He wanted to go back to work.   This lead to complications and his early demise at age 51. Dr. Holder was somewhat of a hero to our family. I have never forgotten his kindness.  I went to school with his son Bill. My heart goes out to him and his entire family at this time of loss. I hope they can find comfort in the many great memories they have in their time of grief.

Dr Holder was a kind, caring physician. He was very supportive of my desire to become a Registered Nurse and encouraged me to further my education. This year I celebrate 40 years as a nurse, 23 years as a Nurse practitioner. Rest in peace Dr Holder.
