Shirley was a breath of fresh air for all the residents of Luther Acres. So talented, so funny and intelligent. I am honored to have known her via my mother, Dorothy, being a hall neighbor. She will be dearly missed by all. Sending my condolences from Twinsburg, Ohio.

Shirley was a patient of mine at the health center. She was very hard to get blood from but she never complained. We grew to be friends and I loved her. She loved to hear stories about my pets, motorcycle and grandchildren. She was the type of person that made you feel good about yourself.
There are only a few people who have a major influence in your life, and Shirley was one of those people for me. I’m 69 years old now and the seed she planted in me when she taught me drums in the third grade in New Hyde Park, NY, has stayed with me forever. As a conductor, she could be a tyrant (and I needed that), but always with a wicked sense of humor. I can still hear her from the conductor’s podium of our grade school band, yelling to me: SOUTHERN!!! YOU’RE DRAGGING THE BEAT! WATCH ME!!!
She remained my mentor all through high school and into my early years of college, where I studied music, thanks in no small part to her influence. I am so sad that I was unable to locate her to tell her how much she meant to me before she passed.
