Florence M. Hoogerwerff, 77

Florence Marie (Burgoon) Hoogerwerff, 77, of Strasburg passed away after a long battle with cancer on Monday, October 1st with her family by her side.
She was born October 26, 1940 in Pittsburgh, PA to Catherine Shunk Burgoon and Regis Burgoon. She attended Penn Hills High School and Saddleback College. Her family called her “Sissy”. She had one sister, Elizabeth Burgoon King.
She married John Corbit Hoogerwerff in 1962 at St. Anselm Church.
Their son, John Corbit “Corrie” Hoogerwerff was born in 1963.
Florence worked as an administrator and coordinator in many places including the California DMV, Title and mortgage companies, and the State of Pennsylvania.
Florence and John lived an exciting life with the Marine Corps and enjoyed being stationed many places including Arlington, Virginia, San Diego, California, Washington DC, Mission Viejo, CA and finally retiring to Lancaster, PA. She also enjoyed long trips to Japan and Hawaii while her husband was stationed there. Florence’s favorite trip was to Ireland.
Florence enjoyed antique collecting and she ran an antique business in California with her husband John. She lived most of her time in California. After moving to Strasburg in 1998, Florence worked at the county courthouse for several years. She was a member of the Strasburg Heritage Society and helped for many years at Strasburg Heritage Days. She also served on the Strasburg Architectural Review Board to help preserve Strasburg’s historical preservation.
Florence is survived by her husband John. Her nieces and nephews Tim (Laura) King, Mary (Tracy) Vargo, Terry (Don) Yates, Thomas (Sharon) Pardue, her great nephews, Patrick and Andrew Vargo and her great niece Katherine Vargo.
Florence will be missed by much family and many friends and neighbors. She was a joy to everyone that knew her.
Florence was preceded in death by her son John Corbit, sister Elizabeth, parents Catherine and Regis and step father William Coulson.
A Viewing will be on Friday, October 5th from 10-11AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St, Lancaster, PA 17602, followed by Mass at 11AM. There will be a viewing from 11AM-1PM Saturday, October 6th at Nied Funeral Home, 7441 Washington Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15218 followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Connellsville, PA.

I am so sorry to hear of Florence’s passing. She was one of the kindest women I knew. I worked with her for quite awhile quite a few years ago, but I thought of her often. She was so excited when I was pregnant with my oldest son, I think she was as excited as I was. Her gentle nature and kind heart will always be embedded in my memory. John and family, sending prayers to you. Florence was very special to me.
