Herbert E. Karlip, 80

August 06, 2023

Herbert E. Karlip, 80, of Lancaster passed away Sunday, August 6, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lancaster, PA, “Herb” was the son of the late Joseph and Bess (Cantor) Karlip. He was the loving husband of Bonnie (Ness) Karlip with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.

He was a 1960 graduate of McCaskey High School. Herb later went onto Millersville University where he received both his Bachelor’s (1964) and Master’s degree (1977) in education. He worked in Conestoga Valley School District for over 35 years, primarily as a beloved 5th grade teacher at Fritz Elementary.

Herb enjoyed playing tennis, pickleball, bridge, trivia and was a huge Penn State fan. Above all else, spending time with family and friends were the most important things in his life.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Beth A. wife of Edwards S. “Ted” Little Jr., of Etters, PA, and Jennifer L. wife of Gary G. Jones of Chagrin Falls, OH; three grandchildren, Edwards S. “Ted” Little III, Sarah, and Luke Jones.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Family and friends will be received from 10-11AM at the funeral home on Sunday. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Herb’s memory may be made to Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.

Condolences to the Family

Herb was a man who lived life to the fullest. He was good at life. He was a good husband and father,  a good grandfather and a good grandfather and a  good teacher. Herb was also good friend and he had a ton of friends. If you received one of his (always) all-caps HERB HERE emails that was a “send all,” it included an enormous number of names. When they say “he will be missed,” in Herb’s case that means missed by a whole lot of people. To say that Herb was “outgoing” is certainly an understatement. Herb  was  good at enjoying himself. He loved tennis and bridge and trivia competitions and he was good at all of them. And, of course, he loved food. But most of all, he loved Bonnie. I know she knows that, and I hope that is some consolation to her now that he’s gone.

My sister-in-law sent me the notice about Herb’s passing and I needed to let you know what a great mentor Herb was to me when I started my teaching career at Fritz. He was the perfect person to make me feel comfortable and so very helpful when I didn’t know what to do. I will always remember what a fun-loving colleague he was – even though I just spent 4 years at Fritz. All of Fritz faculty and staff were wonderful to work with, but Herb will always be special in my book. So sorry to hear of his passing. My sympathies to you and your family.

Thinking of you today with love and sadness.  Herb was a fun brother-in-law.  Remember our earlier days as 3 couples enjoying one anothers friendship.  Many wonderful memories from those years plus the years that followed.  We will always cherish those times.  Herb was loved by everyone he came into contact with as who could not love such a happy and giving person.  Herb, you will be missed for sure! Dear Bonnie and Family,
I agree with all the other tributes about what a great guy Herb was and how he loved life itself. He was and he did. And I know he truly loved all of you. He made that very obvious from the many stories he told me about all of you through all the years I knew him. And he was a true friend to me and helped me out whenever I needed him.
I also know he could be a bit stubborn and uncooperative at times; and, as he moved toward his final act in this life, I know these past months have not been an easy time for any of you—all normal stuff given the circumstances, to say the least.
I know, too, you all had a deep love of him and did the best you were able to do to help him toward and through his passing. I hope you are all at peace with your efforts and will be able to remember and reminisce about all the good times as you move on with your lives.
Love to each of you from Sue and me.

“Uncle Herb” was my favoritive uncle growing up. He was always a lot of fun and a super nice guy. I remember visiting your house and the shore with our family when I was a youngster. The beach trips were always a blast! Thanks for sharing the video. Rest in peace “Uncle Herb”! Love and best wishes from the Fogles in Washington.

words can not describe the loss of our Buddy. He was a true friend. His smile, laugh, and enthusiasm will be forever embedded in our memory. Be still and listen. Herb’s joy of life can be heard with each passing breeze that caresses the leaves.

I knew Herb way back in the days of the Jewish Community Center on East King St. as well as Oregon Pike .  I did not realize the family was still in Lancaster.  Our paths have not crossed in many years but I want to give my condolences to the family. With Deepest Sympathy, Alan Loss

Herb was such a special person.  My good fortune was to meet him when he was helping out Reading Matters and we seemed to form an instant friendship.  I would go to visit him and Bonnie and we shared many good times together.  Often, Herb would drive us places he was not the least bit interested in and then sit patiently waiting for us always with a smile on his face. He loved his life and what I always called his “Fun Herb Activities.” I know he will be greatly missed by his devoted family, and his many friends.

Bonnie and all of Herb’s family.
It’s been a long time since I shared a bit of life’s journey with Herb. I enjoyed our touch football and tennis games so many years ago. I also appreciated his support and friendship back then, and in later years, our mini reunions and conversations at the LANCO annual meetings. I am blessed to have spent time with him. May all of you find peace during this difficult time.
Good-byes may be the law on Earth, but reunions are the Law of Heaven. So I’ll just say see you later Herb. Peace.

To the Kalip family, it is with great sadness to hear of the loss of our wonderful Herb. My prayers and thoughts are with the family. May God comfort and strengthen you during this time of sorrow. My memory is of one who gave so much. From the first tennis ball that he hit with us, it was so wonderful. Our enjoyment extended to many lunches. I will miss Herb and our wonderful phone conversations.
God Bless, Pete Kuntz of Denver and Lancaster

Herb was great! I played Trivia with him and his friends for years and years. Unfortunately I moved away but we still kept in touch. He was a great friend to me during some tough years. And I helped it out with his computer issues when he needed it. I’m so sad that he is gone.  Matthew Butch

Mr. Karlip was my 5th grade home room teacher at Fritz Elementary. The best part of that school year for me was when he read novels aloud–Big Red and Island of the Blue Dolphins. He holds a special place in my heart.

Mr. Karlip was one of my favorite teachers! He was ahead of his time with his innovative teaching methods. I remember when I was in college learning to be a teacher, I kept remembering that Mr. Karlip taught exactly how they were recommending. When I taught 3rd grade, I took the math game we made in 5th grade (the one with a wooden base, bent hangers, and metal washers) to school and taught it to my students. I still remember the bulletin board I made on WWII, the puppet show we did on Lexington and Concord, and the interactive learning station I made on the Pony Express. He had the students do the science experiments for the class, not watch the teacher do them. Mr. Karlip was so hands on, and I’m sure that’s why I remember so much. He taught us an innovative way to multiply without the typical errors of the traditional method, and we got to use actual measuring cups and spoons during our measurement unit. My best 5th grade memories are probably of trying to solve his minute mysteries by asking yes and no questions. I still remember many of them 38 years later! Oh! And l can’t forget Krypto, the fun game that taught me to do mental math quickly and without paper. My condolences to the family. Mr. Karlip will be greatly missed. He was definitely a “beloved fifth grade teacher”! ❤️

My deepest condolences to Herbie’s family.  I think I have known him for most of my 80 years.  What a great guy!   I always looked forward to class reunions because I knew I would see him there.  I will sorely miss him at the next one.  Rest in peace, Herbie.  Will see you on the other side.
