Lis King, 90

August 19, 2023

Lis King passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 90 years of age. Lis was born and raised in Denmark and, through student exchange programs, studied art and literature at major European universities.

A journalist, she moved to the U.S. in 1956 with her first husband and baby daughter. She worked in journalism in suburban New York and the U.S. Virgin Islands before starting a public relations career spanning 30 years and representing an international group of corporate clients. Many were centered on interior design, entertainment, architecture, building, remodeling and environmental matters. In 2000, she returned to journalism, freelancing for national and regional magazines and news media.

Lis’s first husband died shortly after her and her young family’s arrival in the U.S. Her second husband, Robert John King, died in the 1970s, and her third husband, Theodore Pace, in 2010. Her daughter, Dorte Levy, also died in 2010. Lis moved to Lancaster in 2011, proclaiming it the best thing she ever did.

Hard-working, adventurous, resilient, optimistic and wickedly smart, Lis was a staunch defender of individual liberty a free enterprise, a masterful storyteller, an occasional instigator and a good friend. Lis will be lovingly remembered by her son-in-law, Art Levy, and will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. Services will be private. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Lancaster County Conservancy or the Manheim Township Public Library.

I was very saddened  to learn that Lis has passed away. We met in the early seventies while i was visiting the US and she was instrumental in persuading me to stay longer than i had planned! After my return to the UK we stayed in touch and after my marriage we took a trip to the US and met up with her and Ted again. She was a great influence in my life and although over the years our contact was reduced to Christmas and the odd email i did follow her career and knew how much ashe loved living in Lamcaster. I am sure she will be sgreatly missed for sher kindness and wisdom. Best wishes to all.x

I met Lis at the Mahwah Writers Collective, or Group as it was first named. Smart, mischievous, and successful, she was everything I wanted to be as a writer. When I read of her death in August of this year I was devasted, although I hadn’t seen or talked with her for many years. She is greatly missed.

I am so sad to say goodbye to Lis.  I have known her for 40 years.  Mostly as a long distance penpal although we visited in person a few times over the years.   She was  feisty and funny and passionate about life and her work.  I will miss hearing from her and will never forget her and the life lessons she taught me.  Love and hugs forever 💗

I am saddened to hear this news. Lis was a lovely person, and I enjoyed working with her on Kitchen & Bath Design News. She handed in her very last story just a few weeks ago, and it will be in our October issue. I hope we do her proud.

I will miss her wonderful stories of her life well lived. I will miss her spark for life that she shared with everyone she met especially those who loved to tell stories as much as she did. My heart goes out to all of her friends and family at this difficult time.

My condolences to Lis’ family. We enjoyed working with her as a correspondent at LNP | LancasterOnline, for which she was accepting assignments and pitching story ideas until nearly the end of her interesting, well-lived life.

I will always be grateful to Lis for starting the writing and critique group at the Manheim Twp Library. It gave me and many other amateur writers  the chance to have our stories read and torn apart by others. I disagreed with her about many things and didn’t realize until later how valuable this exchange was.
I still have a book of hers on my shelf. She refused to autograph it even though it is very good. I am proud to have it.
