Charles Edward Lentz, 92

March 6, 1929 - January 12, 2022

Charles Edward Lentz (age, 92) passed away peacefully in the early hours of January 12, 2022 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born to Elizabeth J. Lentz (Auernheimer) and Stanley Blackwood Lentz in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1929. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan Lentz (Van Fossen); his daughters, Joanne Tanzie (Bob), Sally Ann Lentz (Joel Goodman), and Linda Lentz; his three grandchildren, Kristen Frade (Chad), Nathan Tanzie, and Jacob Cowan (Lucie Ferguson); his great grand-daughters, Vivienne Frade and Zoe Tanzie; and his sister, Edith Register. He was predeceased by his grandson, Max Cowan.

A graduate of Lower Merion High School, Charlie served as an artillery trainer during the Korean War and, at one time, served guard duty at the Washington Monument in D.C. He was employed for over thirty years with the Pennsylvania Railroad and as a night manager at John Wanamaker’s in King of Prussia. He worked both jobs tirelessly to ensure that all three of his daughters could attend college – a privilege he never had.

Charlie was a devout and lifelong Episcopalian, beginning with his membership at St. Andrews in Belmont Hills, PA as a child and as a member of St. Edwards in Lancaster, PA. His daughters have fond childhood memories of singing with their father in the St. Andrews choir. His tenor voice was pure and strong.

As the son of a carpenter, Charlie liked to work with his hands – building a model train platform, making unique Halloween costumes for his girls, making ceramics, and creating beautiful metalwork and beaded jewelry.

At his core, Charlie was a quiet and humble man, but he also had a keen sense of humor that entertained his children and grandchildren alike. He taught, by example, the value of hard work and dedication to family. The one word that many have used to describe his character is “sweet.” We will sorely miss his sweetness.

A memorial service will take place 11 AM, Saturday, May 21, 2022, at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601. Inurnment will follow in the Church Memorial Garden.
