John V. Luppino, 76

November 06, 2023

John V. Luppino of Lancaster passed away at the age of 76. He was born to Joseph J. Luppino and Mary A. (Brady) Luppino in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

John’s educational journey began at Central Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1965. He continued his education at Kutztown State College, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education.

In his youth John was a talented saxophonist and a valued member of the Heidelberg Philharmonic, an irreverent and satirical band of ragtag musicians who performed in parades, including the Mummer’s, and at basketball games. John’s love for music extended beyond his own performances; he generously donated his saxophone to help children who were learning to play.

A man of many talents, John became fluent in Italian so he could reach out to his relatives in Italy with whom he was in regular contact. John also had a grand passion for dancing. While he enjoyed many styles of dance, John was particularly fond of swing. His love for dance brought joy to those around him. He had a remarkable laugh and an exceptional sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.

In his professional life, John served as the operations manager of the National Toy Train Museum and the Train Collectors Association (TCA). He was an avid train collector, having an extensive collection that was a testament to his dedication to the world of model trains. He generously donated his time and resources to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum, where he made a lasting impact. John’s other interests extended to history, particularly World War II and aviation. He was a history buff and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He was also an avid reader with a large collection of books that fueled his insatiable curiosity.

Left to remember John are his siblings: his sister, Judith Stump, wife to William and his brother, Joseph Luppino along with his fiancee, Pamela Leister; many cousins and extended family; and countless friends and associates.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at rrmuseumpa.org/giving or to the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum at maam.org

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of John.  I had the privilege of getting to know John through our shared love of Swing Dancing.  He brought enthusiasm for the music and the dancing with him when on the dance floor.  I particularly remember how John impacted me when I first started dancing. He was very kind towards me and offered many compliments and encouragement.  I am grateful to have known him and to have danced alongside him.  John was a cherished member of our dancing community, and his memory will be treasured.

I will miss John not being in the world. In his years of representing my photography, John became a friend. Although I didn’t see much of him in recent years, when we got together, it was like we saw each other yesterday. John had strong opinions LOL, was a compassionate and caring friend, and I will always have a place for him in my heart. He loved his family, and I send my deepest sympathies to Judy and Joseph.
